“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” [1]

As fasting enable us to gain piety, righteousness and self restraint, which we will address in another lessons. It also helps boast our immune systems!

A recent study done by the university of south california featured research by Valter Longo of the USC Leonard Davis School on how fasting for three days can improve a person’s health. The six-month study was done on subjects going through chemotherapy. “When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,” Longo said.
I wonder if Longo was fully aware of the verses 183 above from sura( Al Bagara) which revealed 14 hundreds years ago. Or whether he’s aware of the hadith below narrated by Abu Dhrr said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to me: “If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” (of the Islamic Luna months)
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (761); al-Nasaa’i (2424).

Also the prophet Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him used to fast 2 days of the week. It was narrated that ‘A`ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

«the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, used to observe fasting on Mondays and Thursdays» [Narrated by Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalâni, it is authentic]. (Islamic fasting is from dawn to sunset)

Beside fasting the prophet peace and blessing of Allah be upon him taught us a methods of how to consume foods and beverages and defeat obesity: Miqdam bin Ma’dikarib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “No man fills a container worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back upright are sufficient for him. If he has to, then he should keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for his breathing.”

[At-Tirmidhi].

May Allah grant us health
Until next time
